For decades, military personnel have documented strange encounters with objects that demonstrate remarkable capabilities both in air and water. These “transmedium” craft navigate between environments with apparent ease, challenging our understanding of physics and raising questions about their origin.
History of Naval USO Encounters
USO sightings in naval contexts date back centuries. Christopher Columbus recorded seeing “lights in the water” and what he described as “mermaids” in his ship’s logs from 1492. While skeptics attribute these sightings to natural phenomena like manatees, the detailed nature of these logs — traditionally maintained with rigorous accuracy — suggests Columbus encountered something he genuinely could not explain.
The Japanese vessel Kitsukawa Maru reported a significant incident in 1957. The five-man crew documented two silver, saucer-shaped metallic objects approximately 30 feet long plunging into the ocean near Yokohama. The objects lacked wings or other conventional aircraft features, and despite causing violent disturbance in the water upon entry, left no wreckage or debris when the crew investigated. Researchers like Jacques Vallée and Ivan Sanderson have documented this case, which defied conventional explanations of meteorite impacts or secret military technology.
Operation Main Brace: NATO’s Mass Sighting
One of the most compelling cases occurred during Operation Mainbrace in 1952, one of NATO’s largest post-World War II military exercises. The operation involved 200 ships, 1,000 aircraft, and 80,000 personnel across the North Atlantic. Multiple documented UFO sightings occurred throughout the exercise after Pentagon officers had jokingly told naval intelligence to “watch for aliens.” This was commented on by Edward Ruppelt.

On September 13, 1952, a Danish destroyer crew spotted a triangular blue-glowing object moving at approximately 900 mph. A week later, American newspaper reporter Wallace Litwin photographed a silver sphere following the fleet from aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Officers confirmed no weather balloons had been released that day. Perhaps most significant was the September 19th sighting in Yorkshire, England, where ground crew observed a silvery circular object several thousand feet above a British Meteor fighter jet, following its trajectory before suddenly stopping mid-air, rotating on its axis, and accelerating away at extraordinary speed.
Soviet Naval Encounters at Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, has been the site of numerous USO encounters documented by the Soviet and later Russian military. In summer 1982, seven military divers training at 50 meters depth reportedly encountered three humanoid figures approximately 9 feet tall wearing silvery suits with transparent helmets. When the divers attempted to capture one entity, it allegedly created a powerful whirlpool forcing them rapidly to the surface. This caused severe decompression sickness, resulting in three fatalities.

Russian Navy investigations documented underwater objects moving at speeds around 230 knots (400 km/h), with one officer stating that “50% of UFO encounters are connected with oceans, 15% more are connected with lakes.” Russian researchers noted that these objects seemed to “defy the laws of physics,” with one officer concluding that “the creatures who built them far surpass us in development.”
Bill Cooper’s USS Tiru Incident
In 1966, Navy serviceman Bill Cooper reported a remarkable encounter while serving as port lookout aboard the USS Tiru, a diesel-electric submarine operating near Seattle. Cooper and multiple crew members witnessed unusual water disturbance alongside their vessel before a massive disc-shaped craft, which Cooper compared to the size of a Midway-class aircraft carrier, emerged from the ocean.
The object reportedly ascended into the air while tumbling, then disappeared into the clouds. Shortly afterward, Cooper observed the same or a similar craft descend from the clouds, perform the same tumbling maneuver, and re-enter the ocean. Notably, Cooper described the water as seeming to “open up and part” for the craft with no violent splash despite its enormous size — the water simply closed behind it and returned to normal conditions.

A chief quartermaster photographed the entire sequence. Upon arriving at Pearl Harbor, the crew was immediately debriefed by Naval Intelligence, instructed to maintain complete silence about the incident under threat of imprisonment and financial penalties, and the photographs were confiscated. This case represents a pattern of official secrecy surrounding military USO encounters.
Modern Encounters and Pentagon Confirmation
Recent years have seen increased official acknowledgment of these phenomena. The Pentagon has verified footage from the USS Omaha showing spherical objects disappearing beneath waves. The famous 2004 USS Nimitz “Tic Tac” incident involved objects demonstrating transmedium capabilities off California’s coast. More recently, New Jersey Coast Guard personnel have tracked unidentified drones emerging from the Atlantic in reported 2024 incidents.

Some researchers believe the U.S. Navy has identified specific entry and exit points in both the Pacific and Atlantic where these objects regularly transition between environments. These locations often correspond to extremely deep ocean trenches beyond our technical capabilities to explore directly, making them ideal hiding places. Satellite monitoring and naval assets reportedly track activity at these locations, though official confirmation remains limited.
Theoretical Implications
The transmedium capabilities demonstrated in these encounters suggest technology far beyond current human engineering. Conventional submarines have crush depths around 500 feet, with specialized research submersibles reaching approximately 10,000 feet. Yet many of these encounters occur in significantly deeper water.
The apparent absence of water resistance affecting these objects — moving at 400 km/h underwater when conventional physics would suggest impossible friction and resistance — points to either revolutionary propulsion systems or manipulation of physical properties in ways we don’t yet understand. The absence of water displacement when massive objects enter or exit the ocean similarly defies conventional fluid dynamics.

The consistent documentation by trained military observers, multiple-witness cases, sensor data, and the objects’ extraordinary capabilities suggest we are observing technology that remains unexplained by conventional standards. Whether these represent advanced human technology, non-human intelligence, or phenomena beyond our current scientific understanding, these cases deserve serious scientific investigation to expand our knowledge of what exists in the depths of our largely unexplored oceans.
